Chapter Nineteen
I slowly opened my eyes, revealing silk sheets as white as snow wrapped around me. Pillows as soft as fur were planted under my head. I grinned, snuggling my head deeper into the pillow. The room I was in had a large balcony overlooking the ocean. White pillars stood about the balcony. A fireplace across the room was surrounded with lush decor. This room was magnificent. It was meant for a Prince.
That was when I noticed Ariston sitting at the edge of my bed. “Sorry to wake you,” He apologized, gliding a finger along my back. My cotton shirt was the only fabric preventing him from seeing my scars. I knew he had seen them previously, but I felt comforted knowing my shirt kept him from seeing the scars that would mark me forever.
Generally, I hid from the scars he was tracing his finger over. I hid them from others. I even hid them from myself. It brought me nothing other than bad memories. But his touch was gentle and full of compassion. I had not felt such comfort since the last time I was with my parents. Which was too long ago.
“Can you tell me about these?” He asked, his finger tenderly stroking my back.
I sighed and rolled over on the bed, looking up to him. “What would you like to know?" I asked in a surprisingly relaxed voice. Maybe it was my lack of sleep. Or maybe it was his captivating stare. Either way, I felt comfortable enough in his presence to tell him something I never had the chance to tell anyone before.
“Who did this to you?”
I shrugged. “Don’t know,” I tried to keep from cringing as the memory of the day resurfaced. Ariston still looked at me with curious, empathetic eyes. So I decided to tell him what I did know. “He wore a mask that covered his entire face. His hands, feet, and body were covered in black clothing. I never saw who did this to me.”
He took a hand and brushed it through my ratty hair, nodding. It was so relaxing, I decided to tell him more. “My brother, as I told you, betrayed the rebellion,” I paused before adding, “Maybe he did.” I recalled Ariston questioning whether or not my brother, Mike, had actually betrayed us. I supposed there was a possibility he did not. It was something I never thought of back at home. I was too consumed with taking my punishment head on that I never had time to question whether or not he did it. I just decided whatever he did do, I was paying for it.
“Anyway, it’s what we believed. I was young when this happened, only a child. Word got around that Mike betrayed everyone, that parents and children died because of him. Our rebel leaders felt threatened and feared that it could happen again. If one warrior betrayed the rebels, what was to stop the others from doing the same? They sent rebel warriors to our house, prepared to take my parents from me.
